2008 buick lucerne review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth, spirited, well-engineered luxury sedans. introductionthe buick lucerne is an attractive car, with clean lines suggestive of a fine european import while maintaining buick traditions. Inside, the lucerne is elegant, comfortable and easy. Underway, it's smooth and quiet, but with precise steering and a chassis that handles winding roads with aplomb. We find the lucerne to be a plush, highly competent full-size sedan at a compelling price. The lucerne cx is tuned as a traditional buick, with the premium ride suspension. The lucerne cxl comes with a firmer ride and handling suspension, and is positioned to compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 350. It's a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. The cxl special edition is even quicker with its optional v8. the super is a new model with an old buick name, dating back to 1940 and last seen in 1958. The v8-powered super, which replaces last year's cxs, delivers even more horsepower and features magnetic ride control, an adaptive sports suspension developed for the corvette. new for 2008 are two safety systems, side blind zone alert and lane departure warning, available on all models. Lane departure warning uses a camera to warn drivers of inadvertent lane changes. Stabilitrak with brake assist is now available on cx and cxl. Also for 2008, xm satellite radio is standard equipment in all models, and some options and equipment packages have been revised. launched as a 2006 model to replace the lesabre and park avenue, the lucerne benefits from the structure and chassis hardware it shares with the cadillac dts. In this, lucerne is not breaking tradition but confirming it. The biggest buicks have shared body structure with cadillacs since the 1930s, if not before; and they have shared significant chassis pieces since 1965. buick has a long history of innovative engineering, handsomely conservative styling, and premium luxury at below-premium prices. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery; air conditioning; seats for five people with a power driver's seat; power windows; power door locks; leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel; am/fm/cd/mp3 audio with six speakers and steering wheel audio controls; xm satellite radio; cruise control; electrochromic rearview mirror; remote keyless entry; and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, super features a leather-wrapped upper instrument panel with french-seam stitching; leather seats with suede fabric inserts; harman-kardon audio; heated, wood-accented steering wheel on a power tilt-and-telescope steering column; wood shift knob; and other upgraded finishes and trims. The driver confidence, luxury, and comfort and convenience packages are standard. Outside, front and rear fascias, extended rocker panels, and integrated dual exhaust tips are unique to the super. The front seatbelts come with pretensioners, so be sure to wear them. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor are standard on all models. The first-ever application of a dual-depth passenger airbag has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect. walkaroundthere is no mistaking the lucerne for anything but a buick. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic, buick waterfall grill blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps. chrome trim is kept to a minimum. The only stylistic link to buicks of old is the row of small portholes on each of the front fenders. Flashback to the fifties, when more powerful buicks had more holes. These grille bars turn sharply inward at the top, giving more definition to the waterfall effect. Below the new grille, the look is more familiar, with twin lower air intakes accentuated by chrome slashes that seem to point to the outboard foglights, very much like last year's cxs. the smaller main grille of the cx and cxl is finer in texture, and the twin lower air intakes on these models hide behind horizontal grillwork cut into the lower bumper. the buick lucerne is built on the same platform as the cadillac dts and benefits from modern build techniques for a quiet luxury car. These include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body, and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel. the center stack is located high for easy access, and contains large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system. onstar with turn-by-turn service comes standard and allows customers to talk to a live advisor who downloads complete step-by-step directions to the vehicle through the onstar system. Audio directions are then automatically played through the vehicle's stereo as they are needed, triggered by the onstar system's gps capabilities. We found the bucket seats provide a good level of comfort and come with an armrest in the center console. rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. Lucerne's long wheelbase allows for a wider-opening rear door with almost no intrusion from the wheel well, making it easy to get in and out of the car. driving impressionthe buick lucerne is a smooth but spirited car. Urban commuter is small outside, roomy inside. introductionthe scion iq is a pint-sized microcar perfect for city dwellers seeking easy maneuverability and admirable fuel economy. Bold exterior styling, consistent with the scion brand, helps to fend off any would-be bullies. A continuously variable transmission (cvt) kills some of the fun but, on the upside, helps to achieve an estimated 36/37 mpg city/highway, which beats both the smart fortwo and the fiat 500 with the automatic transmission. sure, the car is tiny, but it doesn't feel that way inside. Several features enable the iq to stay small without forcing occupants to feel like sardines. It's proportionately wider than other cars, allowing not only more space, but a greater sense of confidence on the road. In the cabin, that means an offset passenger seat along with thinner seat backs to give rear passengers more space. Under the hood, it's smaller, more compact components such as the front-mounted differential and air conditioning unit, as well as a high-mount steering rack with electronic power-steering. Underneath, a flat gas tank beneath the floor reduces rear overhang. the 2013 scion iq's closest competitors appear to be the smart fortwo hatchback and the fiat 500. Dimensions-wise, the iq sits in between the two (20 inches shorter than the fiat, but 14 inches longer than the smart). The iq could even be considered an alternative to the mini cooper. And while the iq's base price seems fair at around $16k compared to the latter, that's not a lot of car for the money. Springing for upgraded audio, suspension enhancements and other options can skyrocket the iq's sticker price to nearly $20k. It's paired with a continuously variable transmission (cvt) and gets an epa-estimated 36/37 mpg city/highway. lineupthe 2013 scion iq 15,495) comes in one trim level. The scion brand skews heavily male, so it's no surprise the iq's creators favored strong lines and geometric angles over bubbly cuteness. to make the iq seem less diminutive, scion designers took a chance by straying from typical vehicle proportions. Although only 10 feet long, the iq is unusually wide for a car in its segment. interiorone of the biggest challenges in creating the smallest vehicles is designing a cabin spacious enough to accommodate taller drivers without inducing claustrophobia attacks on passengers. But the scion iq achieves this with relative ease. The cabin feels surprisingly airy, and scion tells us the space between the front seats is larger than that of toyota's yaris or corolla models. The front passenger seat is offset with a track that sits farther forward to give the passenger behind better legroom. Rear seats split and fold down 50/50 and offer enough space for a couple of large suitcases. total cargo room is rated at 16. 7 cubic feet with the rear seats flat. the instrument cluster, like other scions, is simple and attractive, with a pleasing and easy-to-read blue lighting scheme. The flat-bottomed steering wheel is substantial and feels good in hand. We liked the wheel-mounted audio controls, but wish there were also a button to access to the bluetooth hands-free phone feature. climate controls consist of three large, vertically placed knobs on the center stack that are easy to see and reach. On systems equipped with the optional navigation, buttons are integrated into the touchscreen display. sound quality from the pioneer audio system is fair, but, since scion customers tend to be big on customization, we expect music aficionados will roll with aftermarket speakers anyway. An upgraded bespoke premium audio system is also available, with a 5. 8-inch lcd color touch-screen display and a variety of apps, like pandora live audio streaming, twitter, yelp and traffic information. 2012 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This latest design is modern and stylish, with crisp, clean lines. The cabin is roomy and attractive. we found the elantra enjoyable to drive. It has a nice balance of smooth ride and responsive handling. The government numbers are unchanged, however. Also, the steering has been recalibrated on 2012 elantra models for better on-center feel, and the horn has been upgraded. Like other compacts, elantra is front-wheel drive. Its relative light weight, less than 2,900 pounds, helps the elantra with acceleration performance, braking performance, handling and fuel economy. fuel economy is an epa-estimated 28/38 mpg city/highway with either transmission. That's better than the ford focus (26/36 mpg), chevrolet cruze (26/36 mpg), or honda civic (28/36 mpg). It compares favorably to the super-efficient focus sfe (28/40), cruze eco (28/42), and civic hf (29/41) models. Hyundai says its elantra pzev model (that's california-speak for partial zero emissions vehicle) is as clean as many hybrid electric vehicles, though power from the pzev is slightly less. Hyundai claims a range of up to 500 miles. inside, elantra is roomy, especially by compact standards. Its interior measurements are comparable to those of a small midsize car. There's plenty of headroom and legroom for tall drivers. Once inside, the back seat is tolerable for tall passengers, making this a great car for college students, though the sedan's fastback roof doesn't offer the rear-seat headroom of a hatchback. The limited technology package 2,100) adds navigation with 7-inch screen, rearview camera, 360-watt premium audio, automatic headlights, proximity key for key-in-pocket operation. safety features that come standard include front, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and electronic stability control with vehicle stability control, antilock brakes, brake assist, and traction control. Most of the rest of the class looks dated by comparison. The elantra appears to have the sleekest, highest tail in its class and looks faster because of it. It's currently the most distinctive shape in this segment, rivaled only by the 2012 ford focus and honda civic. viewed from the front, the hexagonal grille presents a more sinister smile than that of the mazda 3, more eager to play, a dustbuster with attitude. The headlight housings wrap into the fenders, the trailing edge back as far as the centerline of the front wheels. The crease that runs a rising arc from the front wheel, through the door handles and over the rear-wheel openings into the tail lights mirrors the shape of the old triumph tr7 and tr8 sports cars. The tail lights are long, wavy wraparound fixtures echoing the curves that lead in to the rear bumper and promote airflow to help keep the lights clean; on a dirty road surface the license plate should be the first part shrouded in muck. elantra limited models can be distinguished by their larger alloy wheels, fog lights, and mirror-mounted signal repeaters. We think the nice interior is part of the value proposition offered by the elantra. It has neither hint of cheapness nor pretense of luxury. heated rear seats come standard on the elantra limited model, along with leather upholstery and faux leather door panels all perforated in a wave pattern. Elantra gls models use cloth upholstery. All the elantra seats are the same construction, however. The headliner employs a mix of material that includes volcanic rock to an interesting effect more attractive than fuzzy cardboard or plastic. We were pleasantly surprised to find the center ac vents were color-matched to the surrounding trim, not always the case, even on more expensive cars. room up front is very good and the seats are set well in from the doors for extra elbow space. With the front seats left in place they squeezed under the low door opening into the back, when both found sufficient knee and toe space while one could sit upright without head against the headliner as the other was. It's worth noting the least expensive model does not include a telescoping steering column, which aids comfort and driver awareness. The rear seats are also comfortable, the center floor nearly flat and the center seat higher but well padded. analog road and engine speed complement digital fuel and temperature, bathed in blue at night. Most steering wheels have redundant control options and on cars so equipped telephone buttons for hands-on operation. Radio or navigation/audio atop the center stack was easy to work and see in sunlight, though occasionally we'd stumble upon some slightly odd logic like the low-frequency (bass) adjustment on top and the high-frequency (treble) adjustment on the bottom; alphabetical isn't what we're accustomed to.
